Screening of "Mourning Rock"
With great joy and emotion, the newly formed group Cultterra, composed of young people from Elefsina, addressed the city's public with its first action for the year. Formerly known as Youth Lab, this team, created within the framework of the 2023 Eleusis – European Capital of Culture, aims to uplift the area of Elefsina by highlighting the voices of the youth through art and cultural events, while also exploring the city’s cultural potential.
We recall our first post-lockdown action that took place a year ago, which hosted the acclaimed director and filmmaker Filippos Koutsaftis, with a screening of his film Mourning Rock. Young locals (aged 16–30) had the opportunity to experience a work that realistically depicts the landscape and life of Elefsina’s residents during the last decade of the 20th century — a time that remains obscure or even unknown to the younger generations. After the screening, an engaging open discussion followed, during which the audience shared their questions and reflections both on the making of the film and on the present-day industrial image of the city, in contrast to what it was two decades ago.
Rust emerges from inertia.
The only engine left to activate in this city is the people themselves.
Let’s give the city — collectively or individually — the weight we believe it deserves: for every child, for every minority, for every elder.
We warmly thank Mr. Filippos Koutsaftis for offering us a version of Elefsina we had never encountered, Mrs. Sevasmia Anthi Gkioka, president of P.A.K.P.P.A. of the Municipality of Elefsina, for providing the space — and even more, we thank those who manage to break free from their personal rust.
